These days, you can get a quality cupcake just about anywhere – including downtown San Jose. Not necessarily known as a place for the cute and unique, even San Jose has embraced the cupcake trend and Loves Cupcakes makes a great dessert addition to the downtown core.
Nestled in a row of bars and clubs on East San Fernando Street, the clean and inviting storefront with cartoon and kids-themed decorated cupcakes in the window definitely stands out. The bright white shop beckons to people walking by, encouraging them to try one of the many flavors in either regular or mini-sizes.
That is one of the best parts, in fact: Even though cupcakes seem like a dainty alternative to yesteryear’s sheet-cakes, sometimes you just want a bite or two. Or sometimes you want a few different flavors. Love’s definitely delivers, providing mini-sizes of just about every flavor on the fairly extensive menu, so don’t limit yourself to just one.Especially since the quality is great! The frosting is light and fluffy, although for those extra-sweet seekers, you may not get the sugar fix you need – most of the cupcakes don’t have the butter cream frosting we have become accustomed to. This makes for a more refined experience, but sometimes when you want a cupcake, you are really looking for something almost painfully sweet.
With a host of unique flavors like Drumstick (the ice cream novelty, not the instrument accessory) and Burnt Almond, the selection definitely appeals to those who are fed up with the traditional.
Besides baking delicious cupcakes, Loves supports the local community, taking unsold cupcakes (amazing any are left!) to local homeless shelters. What a nice way to brighten up someone’s day!
