One of the most frustrating variables about cupcakes is the frosting-to-cupcake ratio: You want enough frosting for there to be some in each bite, but not so much that you end up with a leftover pile at the end. The right amount is of course open to interpretation, as some people like a little bit of cupcake with their frosting, and others are fine with just a hint of frosting and leave a whole heap on the cupcake wrapper at the end.
But I found my perfectly frosted cupcake at Crushcakes on a trip to Santa Barbara. Not only is the amount of frosting perfect, but it is perfectly sweet: Sweet enough so that it feels like a special treat, but not so sweet you feel like you need a bitter coffee chaser after each bite. Each of the three flavors we tried were delicious, the frosting complimenting the deliciously soft cake underneath.
My recommendations: Definitely try the cookies n’cream – chocolate and vanilla swirled cake topped with Oreo Cookie and cream frosting – and the buttermilk crumb cake – moist buttermilk cinnamon swirl cake with brown sugar cinnamon frosting. However, Crushcakes also has an amazing selection of daily specials that could include the elvis, fresh lime margarita, caramel turtle, or mexican hot chocolate among others on a day you are lucky enough to go, so make sure to pick up one of those as well.
Another perk is that Crushcakes also has a full café menu, so if you want your cupcake to serve as a dessert and not a snack, you can have a full meal, whether you go early and have an organic breakfast, or go later in the day to enjoy homemade soups, salads, paninis or burritos. Crushcakes also has a few artists among them – the signage is super-cute and you can take home elegant yet adorable gifts, likes mugs and t-shirts, to remind you of the good times spent cupcaking.
The only downside, at least for us in San Francisco, is that it is all the way in Santa Barbara! If you are in the SB area, Crushcakes is definitely worth a trip. Between the delicious flavors and quality ingredients, you won’t regret it!Crushcakes
