I eat a lot of cupcakes, and lucky for me San Francisco is a city filled with options to keep my taste buds entertained. There are always the old reliables like red velvet and peanut butter chocolate that have brought me lots of instances of joy, but sometimes it is just nice to try something a little different. And Kingdom Cake is bringing some creativity to the cupcake scene.
With a menu that boasts flavors like vanilla chai spice, banana salted caramel and banana chocolate peanut butter it is hard to choose just one. After consulting one of the employees I landed on the basil lemon blueberry cupcake.
This cupcake was exactly the type of different I was looking for. It isn’t overly sweet and offers an unadulterated, clean and bright taste. All the flavors are present and not one overshadows the other. The basil icing had a soft, peppery flavor that is a nice balance to the tartness of the very moist lemon blueberry cake.
As soon as I finished my cupcake I instantly knew that this whole portion control thing was a real mistake and I should have bought more than one. If you want to check Kingdom Cake out for yourself, it makes regular appearances at local farmers markets, and is also available to cater events.
