It’s no secret, we love fries! Sometimes that is all we will have for dinner (plus cocktails), and we generally think the addition of them makes everything better. We also love Mexican food, Tex-Mex, California Mex, and just about anything in that general genre, so of course we are big fans of the California burrito. While a lot of establishments have their own spin on what is included in a California Burrito, the presence of fries tends to be a common theme.
Why putting fries in a burrito is associated with California, I’m not quite sure, although as a California-native who loves fries, I don’t have a problem with it (Serious Eats has a good overview, but let us know in the comments if you know the history!). Maybe I’ll even claim that it is because of me.
Enter the California burrito at La Victoria, a local chain with restaurants on the peninsula and in the South Bay. The Redwood City location is regular stop for me, as they have the most amazing orange sauce on the planet, and I love they make the outside tortilla of a taco a little crispy. On the most recent stop, you can imagine my delight when I saw they are now serving California burritos! Although I had planned on a veggie taco and a quesadilla, I immediate changed my tune and went for a veggie burrito, California style, which at La Vic’s means the addition of fries, bacon and nacho cheese sauce. I actually thought the nacho cheese sauce sounded like a bit much (I have some standards), so I decided to opt out of that aspect, but the fries and bacon were music to my tastebuds.
The result – pure heaven. Fries are food of the Gods as far as I’m concerned, followed by burritos, especially with La Vic’s orange sauce, so the combination is the closest thing to food heaven I can think of. Well, maybe pizza after fries and before Mexican, but that is one combo I can really do without. But if anyone knows where I can French fry pizza, I’ll certainly give it a go.
