I am not really a boat enthusiast, but I am a big fan of sailors. Since America’s Cup World Series is taking place right in my backyard I decided to check out the Village and some races.
Even after watching races for hours, I won’t call myself a sailing aficionado, but unlike the spectators next to me I was at least able to tell the race started once the boats started moving. Here is what else I gleaned from today’s races:
- America’s Cup is boats with drinking. I am not convinced most people watching the race even knew what America’s Cup was before today. It is really just an excuse to have a few drinks and eat fair food.
- The sailors are freakishly agile and gracefully move about the boat via the trampoline. It is all very George of the Jungle looking.
- If you are a novice like me then the course makes absolutely no sense. Honestly, it is hard to tell who is winning or losing most of the time.
- Ben Ainslie is a good enough reason to become a sailing fan.
Even though I didn’t really understand what was happening most of the time, I enjoyed watching the boats sail against the beautiful background of the Golden Gate Bride. It is hard not to get into the competitive spirit while cheering on the home team.
The next regatta is in San Francisco from Oct. 2-7, 2012.
