Whenever I visit Texas, which isn’t often enough, my to-do list includes enjoying a healthy dose of queso and consuming my fair share of breakfast tacos. After my last trip to Austin, I have a new ingestible to add to the list – the Mexican Martini at Trudy’s.
Founded in 1977, Trudy’s is an Austin institution with four locations throughout the city. It also proclaims to be the home to the “world famous Mexican martini,” a drink that is indigenous to the city and firmly engrained in the local culture, but has somehow failed to cross the state line.
When traveling I firmly believe in the importance of embracing the local culture and doing as the locals do, so in this case it meant consuming at least one Mexican martini. Essentially, this cocktail is a margarita that has been classed up by serving it in a martini glass with three olives. Made with tequila, triple sec, orange juice, lime juice and sprite – this cocktail manages to balance the acidity with the sweetness for a smooth and delicious margarita, or martini if you will.
At Trudy’s each martini glass comes with an entire shaker full of the concoction, so you are getting quite the deal at just $9 each. Since this cocktail packs some punch and to keep it classy, Trudy’s has instituted a two-drink limit, which let’s admit it is probably for the best.
There are a lot of reasons to visit Austin – one at least being to visit Trudy’s for a Mexican Martini.
